I learned manufacturing on a shop floor and mathematics at SMU. Lasertally is where they meet: software that reads a CAD file, measures every cut, and prices the part to the cent.

B.S. Applied Mathematics, May 2027. Looking for software, engineering, operations, product and technical sales roles starting June 2027.

11 parts 29 pierces 5,837 mm of cut Counted live from this drawing. Holes first, then each outside profile, the way a real cut sequence runs.

01 Shop floor · Summer 2024

It started with a calculator.

I spent the summer of 2024 at a laser fabrication shop in Los Angeles. I drew sheet-metal parts and nest-ready flat patterns in SolidWorks, ran the CNC laser, press brake and tube press, and kept the inventory and order records. I also quoted parts by hand, one drawing at a time.

FLAT PATTERN · BRACKET1 : 1 · mm
240 130 BEND 1 · 90° UP BEND 2 · 90° UP 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Pierces7
Cut length1,145.1 mm
Bends2
  1. Step 1

    Count the pierces.

Every closed contour starts with its own pierce, and every pierce costs time. The outside, four bolt holes, a slot and a large hole make seven.

  2. Step 2

    Measure every cut.

Cut time follows cut length, so you add up the perimeter of every contour. The counter above is measured from this drawing's own geometry.

  3. Step 3

    Find the bends.

Each bend line is press-brake time and another setup. This bracket has two, both 90° up.

  4. Step 4

    Add it up.

A quote is material plus every operation at the shop's own rates:

    P=M+ctLv+cpnp+cbnb+S

Material, cut length over feed rate, pierces, bends and setup. By hand, that is one drawing at a time. Lasertally turns it into a computed, itemized quote in seconds, straight from the CAD solid.

02 Design engineering · Summer 2025

Then a whole vehicle.

At ARMADA Engineering I designed a complete kit-truck assembly, the KT01, in SolidWorks. A centerline-sketch master model drove more than 2,000 components, parametric parts were governed by data tables and engineering equations, and the drawings went out with tolerances and bills of materials. I also took a ratcheting shifter for a Turbo 400 transmission from concept through prototype.

MASTER SKETCH · SIDEILLUSTRATIVE
"WHEELBASE" "OVERALL LENGTH" "FRAME HT" "TIRE Ø"
"Overall length" = "Front overhang" + "Wheelbase" + "Rear overhang" "Frame ht" = "Tire Ø" / 2 + "Axle to frame" An illustration of the idea, not the KT01 drawing: in a master model every dimension is a named parameter, so changing the wheelbase moves everything that depends on it.

The math underneath.

I study applied mathematics at Southern Methodist University with a computational concentration and a minor in business from the Cox School. GPA 3.7+, graduating May 2027. Dynamical systems, analysis, PDEs and numerical methods are what I reach for when a shop-floor question turns into a model.

The Van der Pol oscillator, μ = 1.2. Forty starting points, each integrated live in your browser with fourth-order Runge-Kutta as you scroll. Inside or out, every trajectory settles onto the same limit cycle.

04 Founder · Lasertally LLC · 2026 to now

So I built the tool I wished I'd had.

Lasertally turns a customer's CAD file into an itemized quote and a machine-ready program. I founded the company as a Texas LLC and shipped it end to end: geometry and pricing engines, two desktop apps, the website, subscription licensing, Stripe billing and live demos on prospects' own parts. It is live at lasertally.app.

CAD file to cut part

  1. 01 · Read

    Straight from the CAD file.

STEP, DXF, IGES and NC1 files go into a geometry engine I built in Python on OpenCascade. No redrawing, no tracing.

    STEPDXFIGESNC1

Lasertally quote workspace: an imported job with six parts listed beside a geometry summary panel.
  2. 02 · Measure

    Measured from the solid.

Pierce counts, cut lengths, bends and flat patterns come from the CAD solid itself, not from a drawing, and every part runs a list of checks before it is priced.

Part detail for a square tube: bounding box, tube length, end cuts, contour and pierce counts, and passed checks.
  3. 03 · Price

    Priced to the cent.

Every operation is priced against the shop's own rate card, with quantity breaks, lead-time tiers and material billing. I calibrated it to reproduce a real fabrication shop's quotation to the cent.

Quote panel with itemized lines for material, programming, sheet changes, run time, pierces and travel, and a job total.
  4. 04 · Nest

    Nested on real stock.

Lasertally Nest, the companion app, does true-shape nesting on sheet and tube with kerf compensation, lead-ins, micro-joints and cut sequencing.

Lasertally Nest: parts nested on a plate with the parts list and sheet settings.
  5. 05 · Cut

    Ready for the machine.

Layered DXF for CypCut-class controllers and rotary G-code for tube. Post-processor safety gates block a cut emitted as a rapid, or a program missing its unit and mode preamble.

3D preview of a tube laser cutting a rectangular tube, with the cut sequence timeline below.
  • 1,800+automated tests gate every release, with geometry pinned to ground-truth pierce counts on real RFQ files
  • 15libraries in the C++20 / Qt 6 rewrite of both apps: geometry, nesting, toolpath, post-processing, quoting, cloud sync and UI
  • 250+ctest suites on a Windows and Linux CI matrix
  • $0.00difference in job totals between the rewrite and the shipping engine on real customer parts, held by a parity oracle
  • 121findings from an adversarial full-tree audit, every one triaged and fixed

05 Side project · Notex

A notes app that draws the math.

Notex is a Mac menu-bar app I built for my own classes. One hotkey records a lecture. Notex works out which class I'm in from my calendar, transcribes on the device, and files structured notes with every deadline into that course's folder. Scanned handwritten pages come back as typeset LaTeX, and a graph sketched on paper is redrawn as a live, interactive figure.

Notex transcription of exam problem 1: the equation x dot equals (x minus 3)(x minus 1) squared (x plus 1), equilibria at 3, 1 and minus 1, and a plot of f(x) crossing zero at those points. Notex phase line: stable at minus 1, semi-stable at 1, unstable at 3, followed by the family of solutions x(t) drawn over a slope field.
Lecture 15 notes: the system x dot equals y, y dot equals minus x plus x cubed; a plot of the potential V(x); the energy E(x, y); a damped double-well phase portrait; a stable limit cycle and the solution amplitude converging to it.
Complex Variables study guide: analytic continuation by a chain of circles. Three complex-plane figures show the poles, the unit circle, and discs about z1 and z2 with their radii of convergence.

Problem 1 of my Dynamical Systems exam (MATH 4325, Fall 2026), scored 93/100, as Notex transcribed it from the scanned paper. The plot, the phase line and the family of solutions are live widgets in the app.

Lecture 15 of the same course: my handwritten page, transcribed as written, with the sketches redrawn as real plots: the double-well potential, its damped phase portrait and a stable limit cycle.

From my Complex Variables study guide (MATH 4339): analytic continuation by a chain of Taylor discs, each one stopping at the nearest pole. The complex-plane figures are Notex widgets.

  • On the device.Transcription runs on Apple's SpeechAnalyzer, so the audio never leaves the Mac.
  • Thirteen figure kinds.Plots, complex functions, free-body diagrams, trusses, beams, circuits, property diagrams and more, all drawn from a small spec the transcriber writes.
  • My words stay mine.Margin notes must quote eight consecutive words of the real transcript or they are thrown away, and stripMargins(weave(page)) == page is asserted byte for byte.
